Diagnodent®

This device allows for the early detection of decay so that it can be treated before it does substancial damage to the tooth.

The Diagnodent® device assists in the detection of decay by using a laser to illuminate the tooth, filter out the known wavelength of the patient’s enamel and dentin, and apply a numerical value from 0-99 to remaining imperfections (usually decay).

Dr. Chong has found this device to be very accurate and helpful, especially when it comes to children and teenagers— who are more susceptible to decay on the biting surfaces of their teeth. It is also common for decay to be sealed under a sealant that was placed with the best of intentions. Diagnostics were not available 10 years ago to ensure that bacteria were not sealed in the fissures under a sealant. It is common for Dr. Chong to find decay present under sealants in twenty to thirty year-old patients.
